Born in 1968, and growing up in the 70's and 80's, Dave went through many experiences that shaped his unique creative sense, including a broken home, parental mental illness, violence, alternative religious education through the Unitarian Universalist church, and 4 years in a reform school in Western Massachusetts for at-risk youth. He began painting and designing in his teens; including taking classes at Berkshire Community College in Western Massachusetts in Graphic Design at age 17. By age 20 he was a full-time Fine & Applied Arts student at the Rochester Institute of Technology, enjoying acclaim and independent study privileges with his unique and prolific expressionistic work. Although unable to complete his degree studies at RIT, Dave's path in life allowed him to travel extensively and expand his creative and cultural experience. For various reasons, however, Dave did not paint or draw regularly for over 20 years, although he continued working actively in graphic design and photography during that period. A return to his first artistic love, painting, in 2012, has produced a new and growing body of unique, exciting work with a maturity and depth that complements the exuberance captured in each image. His paintings reflect a lifetime of serious reflection, pain and joy, and finally, peace. His work has been described as "cerebral", "whimsically surreal," and "hauntingly expressionist." He considers his work to be contemplative, but also process-driven. Above all, he values and seeks to convey wonder, social critique, and a sense of the mystery of the creative process. Dave's at times focuses on issues of mental health as well as social, political, and religious justice but maintains fidelity to that mysterious process, regardless of the result. While living in west central Indiana from 2017 to 2023, Dave became active in the local arts community, and was a board member of The Arts Federation (https://theartsfederation.org/) from 2020-2023, serving as Board Vice President for Sustainability until relocating to New Mexico in spring of 2023.
